Driver Introductions: A.J. Allmendinger By F. W. Burns, Team LGR Staff Correspondent
Last time I introduced you to Jacques Villeneuve. I hope you found that article interesting and will look for him on the track this year. Jacques has tons of talent and is a true racer in every sense of the word. If you missed the article on Jacques, you can find it here.
This week I would like to introduce A.J. Allmendinger. Anthony James is 26 years old and was born in Los Gatos, California on December 16, 1981. A.J. drives the # 84 Toyota Camry for Team Red Bull racing, also known as TRB, and is predicted to be a force in NASCAR just like many of his California born peers: Jeff Gordon, Robby Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Casey Mears, and Jimmie Johnson to name a few. Perhaps I am a bit biased being a Southern California native, but from what I have heard and read, I believe that A.J. will soon make his mark in the Sprint Cup Series. Man, that is still hard to say…Sprint Cup, Sprint Cup, Sprint Cup! If you think Sprint Cup is hard to imagine, just wait and see what you will be thinking when you turn on the T.V. to watch a Busch, I mean Nationwide Series race. I have thoughts about the naming rights for a whole series, but perhaps we will save that for a future posting.
Okay, so now you are saying, “what is so great about A. J. Allmendinger? What skills could he possibly have to compete with the “big boys” in the Cup Series?” Here is a brief rundown of what A.J. brings to the table:
International Karting Federation: 2 time champion Barber Dodge Pro Series: 2002 champion Champ Car Atlantic Series: 2003 champion Champ Car World Series: 2004 rookie of the year
I think the 2008 season will bring with it a lot of excitement and upsets. Look for A.J Allmindinger in the #84 and his teammate Brian Vickers in the #83 to put pressure on the usual suspects.
