Toyota and *NAFCAR (National Formula Car Automobile Racing)

By F. Burns, Team LGR Staff Correspondent

I would like to go on the record as saying that I think that Toyota entering the ranks of NASCAR is a good thing. NASCAR, or NAFCAR (National Formula Car Automobile Racing) as it should be called going forward (we can go into that later), has grown exponentially over the last ten years and reached a global audience that rivals the National Football League. As such, NASCAR fans should welcome the success of the sport and embrace new competitors. Competition can only make things better. It is my opinion that talk of Toyota ruining the sport is just wrong. How many American racing fans that are Toyota employees are secretly cheering this new development? I would say 37,351 (number of Americans directly employed by Toyota in North America), http://www.toyota.com/about/operations/numbers/factsfigures04/direct_na_employ.html. When you think about it, is it really a Toyota Camry? Or, will the cars be a NASCAR mandated Car of Tomorrow (CoT), with Toyota Camry headlight and emblem decals on it? Shoot, if a Toyota team decided to sell some cars to Hendrick Motorports, all the 24 team would have to do is paint some flames on it and call it a Monte Carlo.

That takes me into the whole NAFCAR (National Formula Car Automobile Racing) thing. What is “stock” about the new CoT? I am not an expert on automobile manufacturing, but I don’t think that the Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Dodge Charger, or Toyota Camry have anything other than the name and the shape of the headlights in common with their NASCAR namesakes.

Since NASCAR is mandating the formula for the new “stock cars” like Formula One mandates on their teams, then I think that stock car racing should take three practices from Formula One, such as:

  1.

Not calling the cars something that they are not. You don’t hear Ferrari calling their F1 car an F430.

  2.

Have a podium finish and celebrate the top three drivers. It is tough to finish third, reward the top three drivers with some recognition every week. The fans would love it.

  3.

Have a couple of more road races per year; the new cars are probably going to be better at it.

If you have any thoughts or comments, please submit them to Contact@TeamLGR.com.

Predictions for the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup Season

By Todd Berger, Team LGR Staff Correspondent

Predictions for the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup season

Every year, nearly every writer having anything to do with NASCAR, be they professional or amateur, man or woman, fan or hater, writes one of these prediction columns. Is it a tiresome tradition? Sure. But each sports “journalist” has to find a way to shake the dust of and get rid of the cobwebs, and I think this is the universally accepted way to do that.

The other is to write about how to fix NASCAR, but we won’t need to do that until that dead-ish period around the middle of July when everyone’s out of material. Or in week three depending upon how the racing looks.

This off-season (and last season thanks to Busch and McMurray) had more driver changes, retirements, additions and other moves than I remember in all my years of watching the sport. There are no less than 25 or so driver changes, replacements, rookies in new rides and myriad other new things to remember that I suspect the Daytona 500 will be as much about learning which guys are in which colors as they are rooting for drivers in particular.

Don’t believe me? Here’s a list of the teams that are new or have new drivers for 2006 and their sponsor, if any.

00 – Derrike Cope ?

07 – Clint Bowyer Jack Daniels

1 – Martin Truex Jr. Bass Pro Shops

2 – Kurt Busch Miller Lite

4 – Scott Wimmer Aero Exhaust (and possibly Lucas Oil)

10 – Scott Riggs Valvoline (was the 91 car, now with Evernham)

11 – Denny Hamlin Fed Ex

14 – Sterling Marlin (Waste Management. Was the 10 car)

15 – Paul Menard ? (part time team)

18 – J.J. Yeley Interstate Batteries

21 – Ken Schrader Little Debbies

22 – Dave Blaney Caterpillar

26 – Jamie McMurray Sharpie, et al. Was the 97 car.

32 – Travis Kvapil Tide

40 – David Stremme Coor’s Light / Lonestar

41 – Reed Sorenson Target

42 – Casey Mears Havoline

43 – Bobby Labonte Cheerios

49 – Brent Sherman Schwann’s

55 – Michael Waltrip NAPA

61 – Kevin Lepage ? (this was the 66 car)

66 – Jeff Green Best Buy (was the 0 car)

78 – Kenny Wallace Furniture row (sharing the ride with Jerry Robertson)

92 – Chad Chaffin ?

96 – Tony Raines Texas Instruments (will be driven by Terry Labonte early)

Add in that Rusty quit, and you’ve got 26 new faces or new places or both. That’s going to make for a very complicated SpeedWeeks.

Now, on to this year’s predictions. Let’s cover the basic ones first. Who is going to win the Daytona 500?

Much that I think Tony Stewart’s going to start his year in much better fashion than he ever has before, I think the Fords are going to be strong on the plate tracks this year. Combining that with some experience, I think that Greg Biffle will probably win the great American race. My dark horse however is the new driver of the Wood Brothers Ford, Mr. Ken Schrader. Kenny is a great plate racer and he tends to run around the front all day. If his car has any spunk at the end, look for him to be in the mix.

Who will win the most races in 2006?

This is tough. I would say Jimmie Johnson, but that team had some members go elsewhere in the off-season and there were rampant rumors of Chad Knauss’ imminent departure. Though they turned out to be false, it makes one wonder. Another candidate is Mr. Stewart who, when things go right is almost unstoppable, and Greg Biffle is also capable of going on a run like he has in each of the last two seasons. I think Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Eury Jr. are going to surprise some folks as well.

That said, I really do think it will be Jimmie Johnson that wins the most races. Whether he’ll win the big trophy or not will remain to be seen.

Who will win the Rookie Of The Year competition?

This is the biggest rookie class in many years, and I think there will be more than the usual two contenders for the award. The class is so talent rich that I think this will be a good subplot to the season. Here are the candidates:

Clint Bowyer – talented, but if Childress hasn’t made HUGE strides coming into 2007, this won’t matter at all.

Denny Hamlin – The sports next Cinderella story after Carl Edwards. Hamlin is a HUGE talent with a big upside, but taking over a 2nd year team in a car that floundered and wrecked A LOT last year will be an uphill battle.

David Stremme – I don’t get the feeling that he’s ready for the change from Busch to Cup. This move feels like it was more sponsor driven than owner driven.

Martin Truex Jr. – If he was with anyone else but DEI, I’d say it was his. But DEI’s struggled for a while and that company serves but one master: Dale Jr. Imagine how it could be late in the season if Truex Jr. is outperforming his boss/teammate?

Brent Sherman – Rookie in a bad car for crazy owners. He might not finish the season.

Reed Sorenson – He’s the other huge talent in this class, and he’s with a team that was showing signs of life during the 2nd half of 2005. The trouble is that the Dodge still isn’t as competitive as they’d like it to be.

J.J. Yeley – replacing one of the sport’s gentlemen. He’s also wrecked a LOT of cars the last two years. I think this team’s goal should be to wreck less than last year’s driver of the 11 car did.

I don’t think there’s a clear-cut favorite this year, so I’ll go with my gut and say that Reed Sorenson will win a squeaker over Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin.

Which rookie (if any) will be the first to win a race in 2006?

I think that Reed Sorenson could be good as early as Vegas, but he will certainly be the first to win a race. However, he may not be the rookie with the most wins.

Next up is the “who will be the first guy to lose his ride” question?

I think this one’s relatively easy. Of the regular teams (which means I’m not counting Derrike Cope or guys in that category), I suspect that Brent Sherman may very well be gone before we get close to Charlotte in May. He’s got to be under enormous pressure to a) perform and (possibly MORE importantly) b) don’t tear up the cars. That’s a tough call for a rookie in a non-competitive car. Combine that with the fact that his owner hurts him more than helps him, and I suspect he’ll be out early, and maybe of his own volition.

Which drivers will make the Chase for the Championship?

This is the one that I think about most often, and it’s the one that everyone thinks about most often, at least the folks that write these columns. I liken it to picking you NCAA tourney bracket, in that if you pick all the favorites you’ll miss, if you pick all upsets you’ll miss, but you’ve got to be able to pick the right mix of the two.

So, in no particular order, I give you the 2006 C4C:

Tony Stewart

Jimmie Johnson

Jamie McMurray

Jeff Gordon

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Carl Edwards

Greg Biffle

Denny Hamlin

Ryan Newman

Kyle Busch

And finally, the big burrito. Who is going to win the 2006 Nextel Cup Championship?

This could be easy and it could be tough, but employing the KISS method, I’m going with Tony Stewart to repeat as champion and to become only the 8th driver with three or more titles.

That’s all for now folks. Stay tuned in 2006 for more of my musings.

Thanks for reading.

Mind Wanderings... The Rookie Crop of 2006

Dr. Mag Reviews this year's rookie drivers

And Three for the Money: Truex Jr., Bowyer, and Sherman

By L. "Magnum" Cole, Team LGR Staff Correspondent

The 2006 season is shaping up to be one heck of a season for rookies with no less then 7-rookie drivers who will make up a race within a race this year. Dr. Mag gives you his fearless predictions for their success in 2006. This week, the good Doc reviews Martin Truex Jr., Clint Bowyer, and Brent Sherman.

Dr. Mag’s Overview: #07 Clint Bowyer

Clint Bowyer jumps into the 07 car this year, replacing Dave Blaney, who has rejoined forces with Bill Davis. During the 2005 season, Bowyer turned what looked like a sleeper of a point’s battle, to a battle royal, before falling to Martin Truex Jr.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

This past season, Bowyer finished 2nd overall in the Busch Championship, falling a mere 68 points from first place. His 2005 season included 2 wins and netted Bowyer 12 top 5’s, and 22 top 10 finishes. And for good measure, you can also throw in two poles in 2005. Bowyer also started one Cup race in 2005, where he started 25th and finished 22nd.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

Clint Bowyer showed in the Busch series in 2005, that he has the determination and fortitude that it takes to stay in there fighting even when the odds are against you. This can only bode misery for those in the Cup series this year, and now he will bring that same bulldog tenacity to the 07 car. The only real question here is if the 07 car is ready for Clint Bowyer?

Dr. Mag’s Overview: #1 Martin Truex Jr.

The pre-season favorite to win the ROTY this year has to be Martin Truex Jr. While he is not replacing a driver per se this year, he does fill the gap left by a departing Michael Waltrip at the DEI stables, keeping them as a two car team in 2006.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

For the second year in a row, Truex Jr. captured the Busch Series crown, but unlike 2004, this years Championship came down to the final race of the season. On his way to the back to back crowns, Truex Jr. scored 6 wins, 3 poles, and finished in the top five 15 times, and had 22 top 10 finishes. In seven Cup series starts in 2005, Truex Jr. had one top 10 finish, and failed to finish in 5 of those events.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

While he may be the pre-season pick by many for ROTY, he isn’t in this corner. I have too many questions surrounding the team more then the driver. Was Waltrip the problem with the second team, or is it a problem being a second team to someone with the name of Earnhardt? Are all the pieces in place for a competitive second team at DEI? What happens if Truex Jr. starts to soar, and the other Jr. doesn’t? There are just too many questions for me to hand this one to Martin.

Dr. Mag’s Overview: #49 Brett Sherman

Prior to the news of Brett Sherman taking over the 49 ride from a highly popular but departing Ken Schrader, the only Sherman I had heard of was that General who went through the South, and the pet of one Mr. Peabody. I now have three Sherman’s on my list of people I have heard of.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

In 2005, Brent Sherman finished 26th in points, while running only a partial schedule of 24 Busch events. In that span he had one Top 10 finish.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

With drivers like Ward Burton, Steve Park, and Ricky Craven all looking for rides, I am hard pressed to understand this decision. On the surface, it makes no sense at all, but that in itself makes me stop and think. If there is one thing I learned long ago is that if I think something makes no sense on the surface, then I should stop and rethink it. There must be something that BAM Racing knows that I don’t. I just need to figure out what it is.

Dr. Mag’s Final ROTY Forecast:

One of the things you learn when trying to forecast, is that researching your position is half the fun, and you can, and will, think things out differently as you take a “step back” approach. I had a pretty clear cut idea which way I was going to go before I started this task, but after “further review”, I have change my mind. And it’s the teams that they will drive for, more then the drivers themselves, that have lead me to these predictions.

Hamlin - Talent and Gibb’s /Stewart. Need I say more?
Sorenson - Ganassi is steady, and so is Sorenson
Truex Jr. - Too many questions abound regarding team chemistry.
Bowyer - RCR hasn’t proven anything to me lately.
Stremme - Need’s some more seasoning before he really takes off.
Yeley – Needs a lot more work.
Sherman – Hasn’t proven he belongs in this class. Yet.

And here is how the StockCarCity collective staff vote came out:

Hamlin
Truex Jr.
Sorenson

Now watch Brent Sherman win it all!

Good Luck to the Rookie Class of 2006. May it be a successful and safe year!

Mind Wanderings... The Rookie Crop of 2006

Dr. Mag Reviews this year's rookie drivers

The Ganassi Brigade: Stremme and Sorenson

By L. "Magnum" Cole, Team LGR Staff Correspondent

The 2006 season is shaping up to be one heck of a season for rookies with no less then 7-rookie drivers who will make up a race within a race this year. Dr. Mag gives you his fearless predictions for their success in 2006. This week, the good Doc reviews David Stremme and Reed Sorenson.

Dr. Mag’s Overview: #40 David Stremme

Like J. J. Yeley, Stremme is out to replace a legend in Sterling Marlin, who dared to get to old for Coor’s. And while Marlin doesn’t have a Championship under his belt as did Bobby Labonte, Sterling is a long time fan favorite, and one of the last remaining “good ol boys” that once made up the face of NASCAR. What will make this season even harder for both Stremme and Sorenson, is that unlike the Gibb’s team, there is not a former and current Champion there to help them out.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

This past season, Stremme finished 13th overall in the Busch Championship, running in all 35 races and garnering 5 top 5’s, and 10 top 10 finishes. If you really like numbers, his average starting position was 20th, and his average finishing position was 20th. In his 4-Cup starts, Stremme had a best finish of 16th, but DNF’d the other 3.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

Watching David Stremme over the past year was like watching a version of Mark Martin in the making. In those races where Stremme finished on the lead lap of a race, you will almost always find that he started out in the middle or rear of the pack, and as the race progressed, came to the front. And like Mark Martin, he has an uncanny knack of finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. For Stremme to be successful this year, he needs to improve his starting positions, and have an Oracle for his spotter.

Dr. Mag’s Overview: # 41 Reed Sorenson

Reed Sorenson’s comes in the 2006 season as the youngest rookie of the entire group. And unlike all the others, Sorenson is the only one coming into the Cup series who is not replacing a driver who left to go to another team, instead, slipping into the 41 car while the former pilot of the 41 car, Mear’s, moves over to the 42 car.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

For Sorenson, the 2005 season was his rookie season in the Busch series, where he finished only 13 points behind Cup driver, but rookie Busch driver, Carl Edwards, and finished 4th in the overall standings. To start off his career, Sorenson captured 2 poles, 2 wins, and finished in the top 5 a total of 12 times and had 19 top 10’s to his credit. In his 2 Cup starts this year, he had no top 10 finishes.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

Sorenson, much like Hamlin, is a diamond in the rough. His youthful exuberance will have to be tempered with sage wisdom, and he has the potential to be one of the best in a couple of years. I for one would have liked to see him get another full season in the Busch series before the jump to Cup, but he still has the best shot at getting his boss a win or two this season.

Next up: And 3 for the Money: Truex Jr., Bowyer, and Sherman

Mind Wanderings... The Rookie Crop of 2006

Dr. Mag Reviews this year's rookie drivers

The Gibb's Assault: Yeley and Hamlin

By L. "Magnum" Cole, Team LGR Staff Correspondent

The 2006 season is shaping up to be one heck of a season for rookies with no less then 7-rookie drivers who will make up a race within a race this year. Dr. Mag gives you his fearless predictions for their success in 2006. This week, the good Doc reviews J.J. Yeley and Denny Hamlin.

Dr. Mag’s Overview: #18 J. J. Yeley

One of the hardest things to do in all sports, is to replace a legend, and Yeley has been thrust into that role, taking over the ride left by the departure of former Cup Champion, Bobby Labonte, who moved on to the 43 ride. And not only does he have to replace Labonte, he has to try and bring back the 18 car to the prominence that it has lost over the past season and a half.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

Yeley is coming off a full season this past year in the Busch series where he finished 11th in the points standings, and had a total of 4 top 5 finishes, and 12 top 10 finishes while competing in all 35 races. He had no top 10 finishes in his 4-Cup appearances this season.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

Over the course of his Busch Series career, Yeley has never shown any dominance that one might expect to see when bringing up a rookie into the Cup show. He has at times shown some strengths as a driver, but overall, I think he is still a driver in the making, and he will need a lot of support from Gibb’s and Interstate, as they mold him into a Cup driver. Given their impatience last year with Jason Leffler, one has to wonder what the future might hold for Yeley.

Dr. Mag’s Overview: # 11 Denny Hamlin

Hamlin barely qualifies as a rookie this season, as he started 7-Cup events during the 2005 season. Gibb’s needs a quick fix to Fed Ex’s unhappiness with their investment this past year, and as such, is looking for Hamlin to be that fix.

Dr. Mag Reviews the 2005 Season

Hamlin finished 5th in the 2005 Busch season, netting a total of 1 top 5 finishes, and 11 top 10 finishes as he competed in all 35 series events. Yet a funny thing happened when he ran the 7-Cup events. There, he captured one pole, and had 3 top 10 finishes out of the 7 races run.

Dr. Mag’s Fearless Forecast

Gibb’s has found a diamond in the rough with Hamlin. Hamlin’s biggest problem in 2006 will be keeping the sheet metal around him, as he is a much more aggressive driver then Yeley. Fed Ex however will get some moments of joy out of Hamlin, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see Hamlin win a race or two in his rookie season, while capturing a few poles along the way.

NASCAR returned to Kansas Speedway for the fourth Cup weekend in the track’s short lifespan.  When it first opened, the track was a treacherous one-groove racetrack.  Now, it is a treacherous two and a half-groove racetrack.  The treachery is evident in the number of guys that wrecked by themselves Sunday (Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears, Robby Gordon, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne)...

I am usually excited about the Dover races, especially when I think back to the classic Monster Mile races of the late 80’s and early 90’s.  I forget that this is not the Dover track of old. Since it was concreted, Dover lost a lot of its charm.  Gone for good are the days of watching guys driving the right rear off the car, with that tire smoking every time they came off of turns two and four.  Oh well, at least we have “the chase...”

I waited until today to write this week’s column, expecting some things to happen that didn’t.  I guess that’s what you get when you rely on mainstream media sources like the Boston Herald and other fiction outlets.  Despite their claims that Ricky Craven would replace Robby Gordon at Dover, the likable New Englander remains without a ride and Robby Gordon remains in the Cingular Chevy… at least for this week...

After all of the hemming and hawing, guessing and predicting, your field for NASCAR’s contrived chase for the championship is set.  Here are the participants in order...

My Two Cents Worth

By Todd Berger, Team LGR Staff Correspondent

Welcome to my “The Eve of Destruction is Upon Us” episode of My Two Cents.  There is exactly one more race until the C4C starts, and NASCAR has already had to make modifications, stating that anyone outside of the top ten but within 400 points will start the chase with 5000 points.  So it’s possible that 15th place will be tied with 10th place.  Sounds fair, huh?...

Saturday’s Bristol race was one of the more entertaining that I’ve seen in a while.  I was astounded that the Cup race, while twice as long, had 44 percent fewer yellows and 35% fewer yellow flag laps...

Sunday marked the start (more or less) of the homestretch in the “race for the chase” or whatever sub-name the networks and NASCAR have given this thing.  There are now only three races left to set the C4C field:  Bristol, California (just like Michigan) and Richmond.  You thought short track racing was crazy before?  Wait’ll Saturday at Bristol and two weeks from now at Richmond...

My Two Cents Worth

Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen marked the running of the last road race of the 2004 season.  Many folks call for an end to the Cup series’ foray into road racing every year, but I enjoy it immensely.  I especially enjoy watching racing at Watkins Glen over Sears Point / Sonoma / Infineon Raceway.  It’s like the track was almost made for stockcars.  The racing out of the old turn 11, into turn one, the esses and thru the backstretch chicane is just great.  I love watching the big 3,400 pound cars get airborne entering that chicane, and knowing how on the edge of out of control those guys are make it all the more fun to watch...

NASCAR and NBC returned to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the home of the second half of the season’s Daytona 500, the Brickyard 400.

The pre-race show was, as usual, a chance for the boys at NBC to highlight “all” of the drivers who are from Indiana, except they really just highlighted Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart.  Yes, they interviewed Ryan Newman, but not like they did Jeff and Tony.  Wonder if that Alltel/Nextel thing had anything to do with it...

Was it just me, or were any of you actually disappointed that Kurt and / or Kasey DIDN’T wreck Tony?  And, to that end, were any of you mad when Kasey got damaged in that deal?  He went on to finish 3rd for the race, but still…

Viva Las Vegas!  We had a great time at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  Prior to the Nextel Cup race, we were treated to a fantastic morning in the sponsor hospitality area.  We took several pictures of the team show cars (see Race Photos), and got a chance to meet and talk with Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.

Jeff’s time was limited because he had to go to the pre-race drivers meeting.  We did get in a couple of quick questions though.  “With the popularity of NASCAR and more races being held out west, are some teams planning on relocating to the mid-west?”  Jeff responded that maybe some new teams would set up shop in a more central location, but the existing teams have too many resources already in place, and it would be too costly to relocate.  Jeff Gordon was also asked about his boat.  He said that it is over 100 feet long!  He likes to hang out on it in his spare time and enjoys scuba diving.

For the race, we got to sit in the newly opened Dale Earnhardt Terrace at LVMS, great theatre type seating with a fantastic view of the entire track.  If you ever get the chance to see a race there, that is the place to sit.

We’re headed to Las Vegas for the big race!  We will be posting lots of pictures and some stories from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  We will also have an opportunity to visit with Jeff Gordon before the race.  We went last year and the DuPont folks went all out for us.  If all goes as planned, we will also be posting pictures from the pits and garage.  Keep checking back for updates and new TeamLGR.com merchandise!
